If you experience any of these symptoms, you may be suffering from TMD or TMJ dysfunction. This condition occurs when the chewing muscles, bite, and jaw joints do not work together correctly. Contact Lais Dentistry today to schedule a comprehensive evaluation and take the first step toward relief and better overall health.
*Airway issues and Sleep Apnea are frequently associated with TMD and TMJ, but they may also be a stand-alone issue in many cases. Either way, our team can determine the root cause.
TMD or TMJ dysfunction occurs when the chewing muscles, bite and jaw joints do not work together correctly.
THE FIRST THING WE DO IS A TRUE ASSESSMENT WITH YOU TO MEASURE THE RANGE OF MOTION IN YOUR JAW, SUCH AS HOW FAR CAN YOU CAN OPEN YOUR MOUTH, AND TESTING YOUR SIDE TO SIDE RANGE. WE ALSO LISTEN TO THE JOINTS WITH A DOPPLER ULTRASOUND TO GIVE US AN INDICATION OF THE HEALTH OF THE JOINT ITSELF. AN ASSESSMENT WILL GIVE US A GOOD IDEA IN MOST CASES WHETHER THE PROBLEM IS A MUSCLE PROBLEM OR IF IT IS IN THE JOINT, LEADING TO A BETTER TREATMENT SOLUTION.
IN MANY CASES, WE UTILIZE A FULL ARCH SPLINT TO PREDICTABLY STABILIZE THE JOINTS. The splint acts like physical therapy for the joint and the chewing muscles. Our patients often get relief in discomfort within the first weeks. After physical therapy with weekly adjustments, the joints will stabilize allowing the muscles to function properly. At this point, Dr. Lais can restore the bite and teeth to their natural form in harmony with stable joints and muscles. We respect the integrity of each tooth by rebuilding them into their natural form instead of cutting them down to create the natural form.
